Breed Overview
Leonbergers are undoubtably the Kings of the large breeds with massive but beautiful proportions and a kind and gentle temperment.
Leos are intelligent dogs with surprising levels of energy for such a large breed. They love outdoor activities, especially the water, and are very trainable with patience and a sensitive approach.
Leos are family dogs so they prefer to live with you as part of your family, including children and other animals. They are very sensitive to your moods and your family's interactions. Family squabbles can make a Leo very unhappy, so be sure to avoid loud angry arguments in the presence of your Leo.
Leos love to go with you on errands, trips and outings.Taking your Leo along is part of proper socialization and socialization must continue throughout the dog's life.
As with any puppy, Leos can be destructive if left to invent their own games. Be sure to provide lots of stimulation and help your puppy find its own toys (don't waste a fortune on Kongs and shop toys, most Leos will ignore these in favour of an empty water bottle!).
They are a wonderful breed full of fun, sensitivity, gentleness, and intelligence in a big and beautiful package. Ultimately, if you love your Leo it will love you back.
